Descriptions

A city in northeastern Anatolia.
An important garrison town on the eastern border, the city was founded by Theodosius II in the first half of the 5th century. Its fortifications were further enlarged by Anastasius and Justinian, and it was the residence of the Roman military commander of Armenia. Joh. Eph., EH 2.20, mentions the patricius Justinian, a cousin of Justin II, in this role in the early 570s.9
