“The exact location of this monastery is uncertain. Its name is probably derived from a person called Katharas, not from the Greek "katharos", "pure" (by mistake leading to "Monastery of the pure"). As narrated in Joh. Eph., EH 1.39 and 2.46, the monastery was founded by the general Narses in Bithynia before he set off to Italy in the early 550s, thus providing an abode for miaphysite monks who had been expelled from the monastery of Gordiason in Cappadocia. After his death, Narses was buried in this monastery.” 5
