The residence of the patriarchs of Constantinople was adjacent to Hagia Sophia and provided direct access to the south-western corner of the church. Joh. Eph., EH 1.18-29, mentions it as the place where he and other miaphysite bishops were imprisoned and forced to accept an edict of union with the Chalcedonians.3
