He was a Roman soldier martyred shortly after his friend Bacchus since he refused to sacrifice to the Roman gods. Sergius was decapitated at Resafa on the Euphrates. Sergius, often venerated together with Bacchus, was one of the most popular saints in Syria. According to legend, he was a Roman officer who suffered martyrdom in Rusafa close to the Euphrates in the early 4th century. From the 5th century onwards, his shrine at Rusafa-Sergiopolis became a major cult centre for the Arab tribes, as recorded for instance in Joh.
