                    Onesimus was an early Christian associate of the apostle Paul in
                            Rome. Onesimus
                        had at one point been a slave of Philemon, a point which Paul discussed in
                        his Epistle to Philemon.
                        According to tradition, he later became a bishop and was martyred.
