In hagiography: Philoxenos of Mabbug was commemorated as the miaphysite metropolitan bishop of Mabbug. He was born in Beth Garmai. Although he was trained as a dyophysite in the school of Edessa, hagiographic accounts also connect him to the miaphysite monasteries of Tell ʿada, and Qartmin. As Bishop of Mabbug, he fought against the Nestorians and Flavian. After the ascent of the emperor Justin I, Philoxenus was exiled. According to hagiographic tradition, this imprisonment was in Gangra and Philippopolis. Accounts of his martyrdom in exile are preserved in hagiography but difficult to substantiate. His cult was particularly strong in Ṭur ʿAbdin where his relics are preserved (in Midyat). ca. 440s?
