“John held the high rank of patricius, suggesting a military career, and was appointed Chalcedonian patriarch of Alexandria in 570. Joh. Eph., EH 4.37, remembers that he arrested miaphysite clerics and sent them to Constantinople towards the end of the 570s.” 3
