“Marcian was a cousin of Justin II and commanded the troops against the Persians in the early 570s. Joh. Eph., EH 6.2-4, describes this campaign and how he eventually lost the trust of the emperor and was dismissed, with catastrophic consequences for the Roman army.” 3
